Teaser – “I had better control when I hadn’t actually touched you yet,” he said with a laugh. “I thought if I finally tasted those lips I could let you go and protect you from a distance. Now, I just want more.” – Laken

Excerpt 1

Laken ran his fingers through his hair, pushing it out of his face then propped his hands on his hips. “I had better control when I hadn’t actually touched you yet,” he said with a sardonic laugh. “I thought if I finally tasted those lips I’d be able to let you go and protect you from a distance. But now I just want more. There’s no way I could live with you being in another male’s arms. I guess it’s kind of selfish, especially now that Baden’s dumb ass knows about you, but…” he shrugged then turned to sit back on the edge of the bed, leaned onto his forearms and hung his head a little. “You know the worst part of all of this?”

“You mean other than the fact you won’t make love to me for fear of marking me for life, a psychotic vampire is out to kill me, and one of your own released my husband?”

His head snapped up at her words, but she winked at him. He grunted but couldn’t find the humor in that statement enough to laugh. “Yeah, guess you’re right.”

“Sorry, I was just…finish what you were saying.” She pulled her legs underneath her and leaned onto her elbow propped on the table.

“Either I turn you into a monster to keep you with me forever or I watch you get old and die and die within seconds of you. Either way…I can’t see how you win.”~

 Excerpt 2

~Like someone flipped a switch Corry’s heartbeat slowed, her breathing became normal, and there was no more fear pouring from her. She searched his eyes, her gaze going from one eye to the other, then moved from his eyes to his nose, finally settling on his lips. “When you…” but she faltered. Laken watched as she swallowed hard, her eyes dropping for a moment. “When you kissed me it felt like…like…”

“Like the world no longer existed? Like my lips knew yours?”

She nodded. “Like my heart knew you. I don’t understand any of this. This kind of stuff happens in movies. You don’t meet someone and suddenly fall in love. It just doesn’t happen like that.”

Okay, she didn’t exactly say she was in love with him, but at least she seemed to be feeling what he was. That had to be good, right? It wasn’t a flat out rejection. It was his heart’s turn to race. “It’s not like the movies, and it’s not like normal human relationships. Our souls are literally connected now. It would be utterly impossible for me to walk away from you without giving up my essence.”

A smile pulled one corner of her mouth up. “So….I kind of hold your life in my hands?”

Laken leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers, softly, tentatively. When he pulled back, her eyes were still closed. “It sounds so clichéd, but not just my life. You hold my heart and soul in your hands. I know what…I know what Ryan did to you. I can still feel the fear coming from you although it’s nothing like the first time I saw you after that fuc…after he hurt you the last time. But I promise you I will never hurt you. Never. I will never lay a hand on you, I will never call you a name, and I will never make you feel like you’re less than perfect, less than beautiful.”

God, he sounded pathetic and clichéd even in his own head, but he couldn’t find any better words. And again, he waited. He waited to see how she’d react, what she would say. If she would accept him, accept his promise.

“I don’t know what I can possibly offer you in return,” Corry said, this time only staying quiet for a few seconds. “I’m broken, Laken. I’m jaded. Ryan wasn’t the first guy to hurt me, and I do mean physically and mentally. I’m just learning to stand on my own two feet and have no idea what kind of girlfriend I’d make.”~

Something seemed to snap in Laken. He groaned low in his throat, cupped the back of her head in his large hand and deepened the kiss as he spread her knees and slid between them, bringing her body against his. She could feel his hardness through her jeans and pressed herself more against him. Laken growled then fisted his hand in her hair. The kiss became needy and possessive like he couldn’t get enough of her. Hell, she felt the same way. Her hands stroked his face, down his neck, across his shoulders and chest then moved down to his hard abs. Holy hell. His body was as hard and muscular as she’d imagined. Her hands wandered south, but Laken released his hold on her hair and stopped their trek.

Corry groaned her disappointment, but he just smiled against her lips.

“Tonight is all about you,” he said against her mouth. He reclaimed her lips, wrapped her legs around his hips and carried her to his bed. The mattress hardly made a sound as he lowered them both to the bed, her legs still wrapped firmly around him.

Laken pulled back and just looked down at her. “You are so beautiful,” he whispered, his tone reverent. This time when he pressed his lips to hers the kiss was soft and sweet. His lips moved from hers to graze along her jaw, down her throat where he placed a soft kiss against the pulse point. She shocked herself when she actually wished he’d just bite her and mark her as his. After all of his worrying, she couldn’t make herself see the downside of any of it, including becoming what he was. Well, the whole drinking blood thing wasn’t exactly appealing, but the beautiful and healthy forever aspect was what she wanted. She just wanted to be able to be with him, to see the way he looked at her every day.

Laken reached behind him and unhooked her legs and was answered with a frustrated groan from Corry. He chuckled lightly as he shifted his weight so that he was lying beside her. He kissed her once more, this one full of heat, before moving lower, pressing his lips to the swell of her breasts through her shirt. Corry fisted her hands in his dark, shoulder length hair, reveling in the silky warmth of it. This moment was a thing of fantasies and it was happening to her. If he thought she was the only one who would be experiencing pleasure tonight he was wrong. She needed to see him, to feel his flesh against hers, to feel himself inside of her.

His warm hands moved to the hem of her shirt and raised it, his lips and tongue following as he made a trail along her stomach up to her breasts. She released her hold on his hair just long enough for him to peel the shirt over her head, leaving her in nothing but her bra. Thank God she’d chosen something prettier than her usual sports bra she wore every day to work. Laken’s tongue made a warm trail over each rise of her breasts then moved lower as he lowered one cup then the other, circling his tongue around her hardened nipples. Her breathing came in short pants and she bit her lip to keep from crying out when he bit down lightly on one of the pink buds.

“You taste so good,” he moaned against her skin.
